"IllegalArgumentException: wrong number of arguments" error when using flowable-rest with JNDI

Hi,

I am trying to use the flowable-rest.war (v6.3.1) web application in Tomcat using JNDI to connect to the database. However when starting up the web app I get a confusing error message.

I have deployed the flowable-rest and removed from the flowable-default.properties the following settings:

I then replaced this with a single configuration setting for JNDI:

spring.datasource.jndi-name=jdbc/FlowableDB

The JNDI datasource is also setup in tomcats server.xml.
When I deploy the flowable-rest application in tomcat I then get the following (long) stacktrace:

When I googled the error message I found the comments in this thread Need documentation for creating a flowable REST server and the related spring-boot bug report https://github.com/spring-projects/spring-boot/issues/13222
Though these bug reports seems to suggest the problem is that a database driver is missing, but in my case I don’t specify one as I am using JNDI instead.

Do you know anything more about this problem? Are there any fixes or workarounds?

Hey Paul,

In that particular case it was the driver, but it can happen in some other cases.

What I can help you with is to point you to some debug places (in case you can do that). You can put a break point here in the Spring ConstructorResolver. You can make it optional and hit it when factoryMethodToUse != null && causes != null once that hits in causes you will have the actual exception / problem.

Ok, I found the underlying exception - In the end I set a breakpoint at https://github.com/spring-projects/spring-framework/blob/952315c333abf3ab587731b567d809f0a20da5f7/spring-beans/src/main/java/org/springframework/beans/factory/support/ConstructorResolver.java#L478 stopping when beanName.equals("processAppEngineConfigurationConfigurer")

I was lacking a context XML file in Tomcat that linked the JNDI datasource to the web app.

                global="jdbc/FlowableDB"
                auth="Container"
                type="javax.sql.DataSource" />
</Context>

So adding the context xml file fixed the problem. It’s a shame the exception for this was swallowed by spring-boot, as it would have saved me a lot of time.

Great that it worked @pstapleton.

Just FYI the exception is not swallowed by Spring Boot, but by Spring itself. I would open a new issue for the Spring core team as well for this. I initially thought it is Boot and opened the issue there first.
